If you’re looking for a portable air conditioner but don’t have window access in the room you’re cooling, you’re going to need a cooler without a hose. Unfortunately, all air conditioners require ventilation due to the way they operate. However, if you live in a dry climate, you can use an evaporative (or ventless) cooler.

The best option for an evaporative cooler for larger rooms is the Hessaire MC37M. This is a powerful unit capable of cooling rooms up to 950 sq. ft. For smaller rooms, we recommend the Honeywell CS10XE. This model is capable of cooling rooms up to 175 sq. ft., but it’s more compact and portable, plus it includes a remote.

These units will only work in dry climates though. If you live in a humid climate, you will need an air conditioner. You can either get a window AC, or a portable unit with a hose. As well as evaporative coolers, I will talk more about these options in this guide. Since both of these options require window access, if you don’t have window access and live in a humid climate, unfortunately, the only option is a basic fan.

Evaporative Coolers (for Dry Climates)

If you live in a dry climate, an evaporative cooler is the perfect solution. They don’t require a hose and are very portable (even more so than portable air conditioners).

The downside is that they are only suitable for dry climates. If you live in US on the west side, then the conditions should be just right. If you live centrally in the US, then you should still be OK. However, if you live on the east side (or anywhere else with high humidity), then an evaporative cooler will not be suitable and you will need an air conditioner.

How Evaporative Coolers Work

An evaporative cooler cools the air by blowing a fan over a damp pad and evaporating cool vapor into the room. Essentially it converts warm dry air into cool humid air. This is why they don’t work in humid environments. It needs to feed on dry air. Air conditioners work in the opposite way and actually dehumidify the air.

If you use an evaporative cooler, you need to make sure there’s an open window or door to allow air ventilation. Otherwise the room will become too humid and the cooler won’t work as effectively.

Now, if you live in a humid climate, you might be thinking about using a dehumidifier at the same time to dry out the air to allow the cooler to work. This isn’t a good idea because there will be some much humidity in the room from the combination of natural humidity and the the vapor release by the the evaporative cooler that it will overwhelm the dehumidifier.

Best Evaporative Coolers

Here, we will take a look at some great evaporative coolers. If you live in a humid climate, you will want to skip these, but I do talk more about a couple of air conditioning options further down the page which you should check out. Unfortunately, neither of these options are the exact solution you are looking for though since portable air conditioners without a hose don’t exist.

Best for Large Rooms
Hessaire MC37M Portable Evaporative Cooler, 3100 Cubic Feet per Minute, Cools 950 Square...
Best for Small Rooms
Honeywell Fan & Humidifier with Detachable Tank, Carbon Dust Filter & Remote Control,...
If you're looking for an evaporative cooler for large rooms, you want to look for one with a high CFM. This stands for cubic feet per minute and refers to how much air the unit can move. At 3,100 CFM, the MC37M is much more effective than many cheaper models. It is suitable for cooling up to 950 sq. ft.
If you only need to cool a smaller space, the CS10XE is a great option for cooling up to 175 sq. ft. It only has a CFM of 300, but it's more compact than the Hessaire making it easier to move around. It also includes a remote.

Window Air Conditioners (for Humid Climates)

If you live in a humid climate, unfortunately an evaporative cooler will not be suitable and you will need an air conditioner. Due to the way air conditioners work, all of them require some kind of ventilation. If you really don’t want a model with a hose, there is the option of a window air conditioner. As the name suggests, these are fitted directly into the window so there’s no need for a hose.

The downside of window air conditioners is that they aren’t really portable. So if you live in a humid climate and want a portable air conditioner, the only option is one with a hose. You can find our suggestion for one of these further down the page, but first, check out this video showing you how window air conditioners are installed.
