When choosing a compact fridge to convert into a kegerator, it’s more important than ever to choose the right one. It needs to be freezer-less, the right size, and have a good layout to make the conversions process as easy as possible.
Currently, the best mini fridge for a kegerator is the Danby DAR044. It can fit a 5lb CO2 tank and two 5 gallon kegs, the layout is perfect for converting into a kegerator, and there are plenty of guides online using this exact model to help you with the process.
Best Mini Fridge for a Kegerator
In search of the best mini fridge for a kegerator, the first thing I did was head over to a few different forums and reddit to find out the most popular fridges for converting into a kegerator. I found that previously, the best option was considered to be the Sanyo 4912.
These Sanyo fridges have now been discontinued, and the go-to compact fridge for kegerator conversions that is readily available now is the Danby DAR044.
Danby DAR044 Compact Refrigerator
- 4.4 cu ft
- Relatively easy to convert
- Can fit 5lb CO2 tank & 2 x 5 gallon kegs (could probably fit more but this is most common setup)
- Lots of guides online for conversions with this fridge
- 3 colors to choose from
- Make sure to select an “All Fridge” model
The Danby DAR044 is probably the most popular fridge for converting into a kegerator at the moment. There are a few reasons that make this fridge such a good choice.
Firstly, it’s a good size. It’s might be a compact fridge at 4.4 cu ft, but you will still be able to fit a 5lb CO2 tank and two 5 gallon kegs into it.
But the main reason this is such a good fridge for converting into a kegerator is that it is relatively easy to do. The overall layout means you don’t have to make too many modifications, and there is also no freezer to get in the way.
If you don’t know what you’re doing, it can be quite a daunting task converting a fridge into a kegerator, and every model will require a slightly different process. The great thing about the DAR044 fridge is that there are plenty of guides online using this exact model (like in this forum thread). You do need to watch out though because there is a similar older model, the DAR440, and the process is similar but slightly different. The DAR440 is actually slightly easier to convert, but it is harder to find.
There are tutorials on YouTube too like this one which uses the DAR044.
There are some downsides though.
This is true with most fridges, but you do have to be careful when you are making the modifications as the door can quite easily dent. If you do dent the door, it probably won’t affect the performance, but it obviously doesn’t look as good.
A few users have complained about the temperature of the fridge too. On the one hand, it is energy saving which is great, but some people have found the temperature stays above 40 degrees Fahrenheit even on the lowest temperature setting.
But other than that, the Danby DAR044 is a fantastic choice of compact fridge for a kegerator conversion, but do make sure to choose the “All Fridge” model. The other models also have freezers and are not suitable for kegerators.
