There are a few reasons why you should keep a mini fridge in your truck. Easy access to cool drinks and snacks is definitely handy, and you will also find you save some money too as you don’t have to make as many stops to shell out for drinks. But which mini fridge should you buy?
There are three different types of mini fridge you will want to consider for your truck. The best option would be a mini fridge specifically designed for trucks (check out the Dometic CFX mini fridges on Amazon), but these are quite expensive. The other options are a themoelectic cooler (check out the Igloo Iceless coolers on Amazon) which is cheaper but not as effective at cooling, or a standard household mini fridge (check out the Costway Compact refrigerator on Amazon) which is also cheaper, but not as durable and will require an inverter.
Best Mini Fridges for Truckers
Below, I will run through the three best mini fridges for truckers. There are three main types to choose from, each with their own pros and cons. I will run you through these pros and cons below, and then I have recommendations for each type.
1. Igloo Iceless Coolers
Thermoelectric coolers are the cheapest option. They are ideal for cooling drinks, snacks and things like that on short trips. Usually, they can be powered by a cigarette lighter port.
There are quite a few downsides to these coolers.
Firstly, they are not suitable for perishable foods. The temperature they can cool to is dependant on the outside temperature. They can usually only cool down to 30 – 40 degrees Fahrenheit below the outside temperature. In warmer weather, they won’t get cold enough to store perishable items. These coolers are not capable of freezing either.
Secondly, these coolers are not designed for extended use. If you plan on using one 24/7, a thermoelectric cooler will likely die out on you quite quickly.
Thermoelectric coolers are a very budget friendly option though, so if you will only want to keep a few drinks cool, you should definitely consider one.
I recommend the Igloo Iceless coolers. They are available in 28 or 40 quart models, they don’t require ice leaving more room inside, they are reasonably priced and get good reviews on Amazon.
2. Dometic CFX Series
If you can afford one, the best option is a 12V compressor travel fridge. These are specifically designed for use in trucks and plug straight into the cigarette lighter port.
The advantage of these fridges is that they are much more effective and reliable than thermoelectic coolers. They can keep a consistent temperature which means they are suitable for perishable items. Most models are also capable of freezing also. If you purchase one of these, you should expect it to last for many years, even with very regular use.
Now let’s look at the downsides.
The main downside is that they are very expensive compared to the alternatives, but you will probably end up saving money in the long run as other fridges will need replacing more often.
Another potential downside is the size. Although you can get compressor truck fridges that are quite large, even these aren’t as big as many household mini fridges.
I recommend the Dometic CFX series. These are really high quality units designed to last, they are capable of freezing as well as refrigerating and there are many different sizes available so you’ll be able to find the perfect one for what you need.
3. Costway Compact Refrigerator
The third option is to purchase a standard household mini fridge. The advantage of this option is that household mini fridges are just as effective as compressor travel fridges (and also have freezing capabilities), but for a much lower cost. They also come in larger capacity sizes too.
There are a few downsides though.
Firstly, they aren’t designed for the bumpiness of travelling in a truck. Some truckers have gotten lucky and have had a household mini fridge in their truck for years with no problem, whilst others have tried this option and the fridge has died on them fairly quickly.
Secondly, you will need to find a way to strap it down. This shouldn’t be too hard, but it is something to think about before purchasing a mini fridge.
Finally, you will need an inverter to power the fridge. Both of the other two options can be powered through the cigarette lighter port, but this isn’t the case with a standard household mini fridge.
If your truck has an inverter, a household mini fridge is definitely an option to consider, just keep in mind that the fridge might die on you sooner than expected.
The most suitable household mini fridge I could find which has the best reviews on Amazon is the Costway Compact refrigerator.
