One of the main benefits of humidifiers is that they can help to prevent dryness in your sinuses, helping you get a better nights sleep. But if your humidifier is humming away noisily all night, that’s certainly not going to help you sleep. Fortunately, not all humidifiers are noisy, and if you choose the right one, it will operate almost silently. This guide should help you pick the perfect quiet humidifier for your bedroom.
You should avoid cool mist evaporative humidifiers if you want peace and quiet in your bedroom as these use noisy fans to create the vapor. An ultrasonic humidifier like the Pure Enrichment MistAire will operate almost silently and give off a cool mist. Or if you live in a cooler climate, a warm mist humidifier like the Vicks 1-Gallon Warm Mist Humidifier is another great choice.
Which Types of Humidifier Run the Quietest?
There are three main types of humidifier:
- Ultrasonic humidifiers can either be warm or cool mist and have the quietest operation making them perfect for use in bedrooms.
- Warm mist humidifiers are a little bit noisier than ultrasonic humidifiers but they are still reasonable quiet, so another good choice for bedrooms.
- Cool mist evaporative humidifiers are the noisiest type due to their use of fans to create the vapor. Not recommended for bedrooms.
If you want a humidifier which operates quietly then you definitely want to avoid a cool mist evaporative humidifier. I would recommend choosing either a warm mist humidifier or ultrasonic humidifier. Both of these types have their pros and cons which we will look at next.
Other Things to Consider
As well as the noise level of the humidifier, there are some other things you need to take into consideration too. This section should help you decide between a warm mist humidifier and an ultrasonic humidifier.
Warm Mist vs. Cool Mist
As the names suggest, the different types of humidifier emit a different temperature of mist. The mist can have an effect on the overall temperature of your room so if you live in a cooler climate a warm mist humidifier would be a good idea, and if you live in a warmer climate you might want to consider an ultrasonic cool mist humidifier.
Will the Humidifier Be Used around Children?
If you will be using your humidifier around children then I would not recommend a warm mist humidifier. Warm mist humidifiers use heating elements which get very hot and can cause burns. I would recommend a cool mist ultrasonic humidifier for use around children.
Do You Have Hard Water?
Hard water can be very problematic for humidifiers. This is because it contains high levels of minerals such as calcium and magnesium. These minerals aren’t harmful when you drink them and might actually be beneficial to your health. However, when you use hard water in a humidifier, the minerals can clog it up causing damage and get dispersed into the air which isn’t great for your lungs. Once the minerals settle they form what is known as “white dust” which can get all over your room. This doesn’t exactly look very nice and it can damage electronics too.
I talk more about hard water and humidifiers in this guide so I won’t go into too much detail here. Basically, with a warm mist humidifier, the water dispersed is quite pure so the minerals are left behind in the tank. This means a warm mist humidifier will require regular cleaning if you are using hard water.
An ultrasonic humidifier will emit the minerals from hard water into your room so you need to make sure you catch them before they are dispersed. If you want to use an ultrasonic humidifier with hard water, you can either purchase demineralization capsules or a No products found. to make the water safe to use.

This means if you use tap water and you live in a hard water area, you will want to either use demineralization capsules or purchase a No products found..
