For many people, washing machines can be a pretty big investment. This means you want to get something reliable the first time round so you don’t have to keep dealing with repairs and replacements.
Unfortunately there are quite a few washing machines out there which don’t quite cut it. Too much time and energy has been put into adding flashy features and not enough into building a high quality, reliable unit. Overall, we have found the Maytag MVWP575GW to be the best choice in terms of reliability.
Agitator Washers for Reliability
Traditional-style top loading washing machines with agitators are known for being well built and reliable. They have a vertical column in the middle of the machine which twists and ‘agitates’ the clothes. As long as the machine is a decent model, this is a very effective washing method. Agitator washers are usually quicker than their impeller counterparts.
There are a few drawbacks of agitator washers. Firstly, the agitator – which sits in the middle of the machine – takes up quite a lot of room. Secondly, agitator washers are usually more rough on clothes than impellers washers. Also, they are generally more expensive to run than a high efficiency impeller washer.
We have found the most reliable top load washing machine which is also very effective at washing to be the Maytag MVWP575GW. It might not have all the bells and whistles of some washers, but it’s simple to use, effective at washing clothes, and built to last.
The Maytag MVWP575GW is our pick for the best top load washer with an agitator. It’s a basic machine and does have a fairly small capacity, but it’s well-built, reliable, and very effective at washing.
- Commercial-grade washer
- Simple controls
- 3.5 cu. ft. capacity
- 7 wash cycles
- 700 RPM spin speed
- PowerWash® agitator
- Stainless steel drum
Maytag market the MVWP575GW as a Commercial-Grade Washer, and with good reason. They have gone against what most other washing machine manufactureres are doing and scrapped all the bells and whistles in favor of a basic but reliable machine.
Not only is it a study beast, but it’s also very effective at washing. You would assume that would be a given considering that is the primary purpose of a washer, however it is surprising how many washers give poor results. As you can see in the video below, the action of the agitator in the Maytag is very effective and it moves the clothes around well.
There are a few minor issues with the Maytag. Firstly, it only has a 700 RPM spin speed. This isn’t a huge problem, but you might find your clothes come out a bit wet which means they’ll have to spend a little longer in the dryer. Secondly, you might find it to be a little too basic. There are 7 cycles to choose from and not many additional features. Again, not a dealbreaker for most, but if you want a machine with all the bells and whistles, you won’t find it here. Another potential problem with this washer is it’s small capacity. It is only 3.5 cu. ft. If you’re looking to do huge loads at a time, you may want to look for a washer without an agitator.
- Very good build quality.
- Effective at washing.
- Simple & easy to use.
- Good value for money.
- Fairly slow spin speed.
- Possibly too basic.
- Small capacity.
